About Your Doctor

Dr. Yang Yew

Dr Chang Yang Yew (professionally known as “Yang Yew”) is an Australian-trained specialist anaesthetist. He was born in Malaysia and has lived in Australia since 18. As a teenager he was a maths geek (with his crowning achievement being two-time Malaysian representative for International Maths Olympiad), however he later pursued a career in medicine and attended medical school at University of Melbourne, graduating with MBBS (Hons) in 2010.

He completed further medical training at Austin, Northern, Royal Hobart and North West Regional (Burnie) hospitals. After embarking on the specialist anaesthetic training program, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2019. He completed two years of post-fellowship training in Royal Hobart Hospital and Royal Perth Hospital in cardiac anaesthesia and clinical research respectively. He has settled down in Perth permanently, after falling in love with its weather, the people, and the abundance of excellent Malaysian food.

Dr Yew has a wide range of scholarly pursuits. He has a Diploma in Clinical Ultrasound and hands-on experience in bedside ultrasound and point-of-care echocardiography. He also obtained Master of Biostatistics (Sydney) and was awarded “Star Graduate” by Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia. This supplements his work as a clinical researcher and graduate statistician, where he has published in various fields both as a principal investigator and as a statistician. His current research interests include prediction of surgical risk and metabolic consequence of pre-operative fasting.

Dr Yew’s practice is shared across public and private sectors. He holds a public appointment as staff specialist at Royal Perth Hospital, where he is actively involved in research, education and quality improvement. He started private practice in 2021 with Metropolitan Anaesthesia, and is skilled in providing anaesthesia for most types of surgery including plastic, orthopaedic, bariatric, obstetric, general surgery, procedural sedation etc.

Outside work, he enjoys chess, movie, travel, photography, and spending time with his wife and children. He is active in maths, personal finance and statistics-related forums, and derive great joy learning and sharing skills and knowledge with friends and strangers.

Patients

After filling out an online health survey, Dr Yew will contact his patients by phone prior to surgery to explain the planned anaesthesia or sedation. If necessary, he would request to see some patients in his room in Metropolitan Anaesthesia.
