About Your Doctor

Dr. Shane Merriman

Dr Shane Merriman graduated from UWA medical school in 2000, and trained as a specialist anaesthetist from 2004-2009, including an obstetric anaesthesia fellowship at King Edward Memorial Hospital.

Subsequently he worked as a full time consultant anaesthestist at Fremantle Hospital from 2010-2011.  During this period his main non-clinical role was to develop the obstetric service at Kaleeya Hospital (eg: sitting on obstetric/neonatal and transfusion committees, teaching registrars and midwives, and developing protocols for safe practice of obstetric anaesthesia).

Currently his practice involves a mixture of public and private work, including Fremantle Hospital, St John of God Hospital Murdoch, The Mount, Waikiki Private Hospital and Perth Eye Hospital.

Depending on your procedure, you may be asked to fill out a patient questionnaire, which helps Dr Merriman to prepare for your anaesthetic.

Please also fill out the questionnaire if you have any significant medical conditions.

* Significant medical conditions include, but are not limited to: obstructive sleep apnoea, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, severe or unstable asthma/COPD, severe oesophageal reflux, achalasia, significant kidney disease, bleeding disorders, and any condition requiring you to take blood thinners. Please also notify me if you have been told you have a difficult airway, or if you have morbid obesity – body mass index greater than 40 (BMI calculators are available on the internet).

Please make sure you follow his instructions on fasting.

He is happy to be contacted with any questions about fasting requirements or medications leading up to surgery.

Dr Merriman is also happy to discuss smoking cessation prior to your procedure if this is relevant to you.

Please try to keep healthy and rest assured he will do his very best to look after you.
