Dr. David Borshoff

Dr Borshoff was educated at the University of Western Australia and completed medical training at Royal Perth Hospital.

After embarking on the specialist training program for anaesthesia, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 1996.

He completed two years of post-fellowship training in Cambridge (UK) at both Addenbrookes and Papworth Hospital undertaking sub-speciality training in transplantation anaesthesia (liver and kidney) and cardiac anaesthesia.

After returning to Perth in 1998 as a sessional consultant at Fremantle Hospital, he also began working in private practice. In 1999 he moved to Royal Perth Hospital working as a cardiac anaesthetist and as a member of the cardiothoracic unit transplantation team until 2014.

He has been a past chairman of Metropolitan Anaesthesia, is a past state chairman of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists and previously the Director of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at St John of God Murdoch Hospital.

His practice has included paediatric, orthopaedic, bariatric, obstetric, general and cardiac anaesthesia.

Dr Borshoff is also the author of the highly successful Anaesthetic Crisis Manual (theacm.com.au) now in its second edition and having been translated into Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish and German. He is also co-editor with Dr Scott Weingart of The Resuscitation Crisis Manual, co-editor with Dr Paul Sadleir and Dr Steve Same of The Perfusion Crisis Manual and is currently developing the A-CAS decision support system for crisis management. His anaesthetic interests include cardiac and bariatric anaesthesia, crisis management and simulation. He is the holder of a private pilot’s licence and continues to apply aviation safety principles, including CRM, to the healthcare industry.

He has been an instructor for the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care patient safety course and is on the advisory panel for the European Patient Safety Foundation

He is married with 4 grown up children and in his spare time enjoys music, surfing and motorcycling.
